Description
The playground known as “Land of the Choriner” reopened on 24 June 2021 after nearly ten years of closure, delighting local families with its imaginative new design. Nestled behind ChorinerStr.21 in Prenzlauer Berg, with entry via the driveway beside the Schule am Teutoburger Platz, it offers roughly 3245m² of play space. In 2018, children, teens and neighbours co‑created the concept during participatory workshops, inventing the “Choriner Folk” whose copper‑toned terracotta towers—called “Chorounds”—now anchor the playground’s storytelling structure. Towering wooden palisades and mature trees preserve the site’s enchanted forest‑fort atmosphere, while rope bridges, spiral staircases and stone circles invite climbing, hiding, and gathering. The layout is elegantly divided into three zones: the leafy “Valley of the Old Choriners” for free play; the central “Capital” featuring high towers and rope networks; and a gentle “Suburb” zone for toddlers equipped with sand pits, balancing logs and small slides. Teens and older kids can enjoy a ping-pong table and street-ball hoop tucked under the canopy for casual games and meetups . Youngest visitors delight in the Suburb’s colourful playhouse, giraffe-shaped slides, sandbox and spring rockers designed for early motor skills and sensory engagement. Sustainability was a guiding principle: existing granite paving and equipment from the old playground were integrated, and the heavy Chorounds were carefully craned into place to protect root systems. The project was delivered by Berlin‑based hochC Landschaftsarchitekten, with Alpina AG and X Move GmbH, at a total cost of 860000€, funded by a Monument Protection & Sustainable Development programme. Today the “Welt der Choriner” is cherished as a hidden, greenedged oasis in the neighbourhood—an inclusive, nature-rich space that blends storytelling, design and intergenerational play
